Dachau camp was a training cent for the SS concentration camp guards. The camp was divided into two sections- the camp area and the crematoria area. The camp area consisted of 32 barracks, including one for clergy imprisoned for opposing the Nazi Regina and one reserved for medical experiments. The camp administration was located in the gatehouse at the main entrance. During the first year, the camp held about 4,800 prisoners. In Dachau, as in other Nazi camps, German physicians performed medical experiments on prisoners, including high-altitude experiments, hypothermia experiments and experiments testing new medications. Hundreds of prisoners died or were permantely disabled as a result or those experiments. Some of the prisoners names were Leon Blum and Kurt Von Schuschnigg.
The first commander was Hilmar Wackerle who trained with Himler. Hilmar was charged with murder for the harsh punishment of the prisoners and relieved of duty on June 26, 1933. Then the charges were later dropped. The second commander was Theodor Eicke he also trained with Himler. He was a German general and he helped get Dachau ready. He was pointed commander of Dachau June 26, 1933, by Himler
